By the Numbers The Steel Curtain By the Numbers The Steel Curtain In the United States and Europe, we tend to think of steelmaking as an industry of the past. Over the last 40 years, employment in steelmaking has dropped by about two-thirds in the United States and Germany and by 85 percent in the United Kingdom. There are maybe as many steelers left in Pittsburgh as there are cowboys in Dallas.While steelmakers may be disappearing, gains in productivity mean overall production hasnt followed the sharp reduction in employment. Data from the World Steel Association, a trade group based in Brussels, shows that in most of the developed world steel production has been roughly steady for a generation. In North America, for instance, production of crude steel has bounced from 125 million tons in 1980 to 135 million tons in 2000 to 111 million tons in 2015. In the same three years in the original 12 member states of the European Union, the production figures were 142 million, 148 million, a nd 129 million tons.Annual crude steel production, in million metric tons.Indeed, global steel production figures outside of Asia are remarkably steady, staying in a band centered on 500 million tons a year. Over those 35 years, however, global steel consumption welches anything but steadyconsumption has doubled since 2000, reaching 1,670 million tons last year. To feed that growing demand, production in Asia skyrocketed.South Korea has invested intensely in heavy industry, and its steel production has grown accordingly from 9 million tons in 1980 to 43 million tons in 2000 and 72 million in 2015. India has also had explosive growth in steel over the same period, jumping from 10 million tons to 27 million to 87 million.But the steel production growth in China is in a totally different league. China was already a large steel producer in 1980 its 37 million tons made it the fifth largest in the world, behind the United States, the Soviet Union, Japan, and West Germany. But industriali zation and urbanization had only begun to take hold in China, and by 1996, it was the worlds largest steel-producing nation with 101 million tons produced.For the past decade, steel production was dominated by China.With the entry of China into the World Trade Organization, however, steel production went into overdrive. In the seven years from 1996 to 2003, steel production more than doubled by 2006, it doubled again. By 2014, China produced 822 million tons of crude steel, or about what the rest of the world produced. As much as 10 percent of its steel production now is exported.It seems unrealistic to believe that the breakneck growth in China can continue. Indeed, production fell back a bit in 2015, and thanks to the slowdown in the Chinese economy, the industry has seen year-over-year declines in each of the past 12 months.There is no reason to believe that the steel centers of China will soon resemble the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania. But while almost 60% of those surveyed said that coworkers were most often the perpetrators of bullying, they werent the only ones making people feel uncomfortable at work.Among people who have seen sexual harassment play out or gone through it specifically, 44% said it was still unresolved at the time of the research. Among people who have seen sexual harassment or had it done to them, one in five said it was subtle or overt.The company surveyed 1,025 adults in the U.S. Here are some key points, and how you can absprache with bullying in your workplace.Whos bullying others at workThe research found thatwhile one in fiv e experienced bullying from a subordinate, 23% said it was done by a company leader and 39% said it was done by a supervisor, while 67% have witnessed a colleague getting bullied.According to the findings, getting yelled at or made fun of in the presence of coworkers happened to 29% of respondents, while other reported examples included coercion to work extra hours (22%), bullying because of body type or appearance (23%), pressure to take on a specific task (23%), and bullying based on the type of clothing they were wearing (23%).Jill Gress, vice president of Radius Global Market Research, commented on the findings in a statement Harassment at work is not just limited to encounters that are sexual in nature, she said. He also mentioned emphasizing how these actions arent good for business when talking to a top manager.What to do if it comes from a coworkerSally Kane, an editor, attorney and writer with a focus on careers, legal and business matters, writes in The Balance about steps to take if the bullying perpetrator is someone you work with. If youre being tormented by a co-worker, you can take the matter to your supervisor, but this might make the situation worse if your supervisor reprimands or otherwise imposes so me type of punishment against the instigator, She writes. If your supervisor is the problem, go over his head if possible. You might want to keep notes and documentation of the incidents so you have proof.
